Speaking at a TEDx Youth Event in Fresno, CA!
I'm sharing a story as posted on Instagram this morning:
This morning I just signed and gave a copy of my book to the most incredible young woman, an organizer of the TEDx Youth event she just confirmed I’ll be speaking at! More info soon, but it’s tentatively scheduled for August and will be taking place in Fresno, California!
It’s going to be a talk about the importance of changing the conversation around eating disorders for teenagers (starting with what an eating disorder is, the misconceptions and unnecessary stigma/shame around it, and solutions). I’m inviting young people and their parents to reach an understanding that looks at what’s going on INSIDE of the person going through the eating disorder.
Part of the problem I faced when younger came in the form of statements like: “But you don’t LOOK like you have an eating disorder,” “You’re skinny, just eat!,” and “It’s a good weight loss plan, just don’t do it all the time and it’s not an eating disorder”. Seriously. This is the unhelpful nonsense I heard. That other young women are hearing! For me, there were no voices of reason, no one who had been there, experienced that, and offered hope. Not external stuff, but the internal kind, the kind of beauty, acceptance and love that only you can build for yourself. It all starts by changing the way you talk to yourself, by rewriting your Perfectionism Stories that keep you in pain.
Every time I give a copy of “Escaping Perfectionism: Rewrite Your Story & Reclaim Your Life” (link in bio to purchase on Amazon), I extend an invitation to someone else to change the conversation, from within themselves and/or for others who are still learning to love themselves. It gets better when you share, I promise, and there is so much light ahead when you change the way you see yourself and your life, even the hard stuff. That’s where your biggest opportunity for love, growth, and connection stems from.
