Here's How Self-Care Can Change Our Lives
This week I posted about the importance of self-care on my Instagram, and the response was so incredibly high and positive that I wanted to share it with you. Here it is:
As we go out into the world and pursue our dreams, we’re taught to stay positive, to work hard, and not to complain. But where does that leave us when it comes to the inevitable bad day, the normal fears that come along with change and increasing responsibilities, and the unexpected things life throws at us?
This has been on my mind so much that my TEDxYouth talk has evolved from being solely about eating disorder awareness to the most important awareness of your life: YOU. You must love and care for yourself, and several years of being in active recovery from my eating disorder has taught me how to do just that. So I’m talking to high school and college students about having an internal compass that will guide them when they suddenly lose the structure of school schedules.
Here’s my biggest piece of advice for healing from any emotional pain, just for YOU💕:
Whatever you do, RESIST the urge to numb out! You know what numbing out looks like because you feel ashamed of whatever it is you’re doing afterward. For me it was my eating disorder, for you it could be over-sleeping, partying too much, shopping and getting in debt... any activity fueled by self-avoidance.
Here’s why it’s important to avoid numbing out like the PLAGUE: your feelings tell you what is and isn’t acceptable to you. This is the basis of setting boundaries. Boundaries are the ultimate act of self-love.
I talked about setting boundaries in a recent post, and I’ll probably bring them up again soon, because deciding what you will and won’t do, accept, and build your life around determines how you’ll feel when you achieve the goals you’re working so hard to obtain.
Love yourself no matter where you’re currently at and you’re already more than halfway there. 💕
